an incredible place to visit and stay at. located right next to the marches, the border between england and wales brings its own share of magical wonders. the phoenix tree is built by hand and built to last. so much care and passion of the craft is clearly put into  this build and feels like a cozy home. my partner and i visited for a weekend and not only got to enjoy the nature and sauna :)) but also had the pleasure of meeting the wonderful owners matt and rachel! man these guys… so much to learn from them and such joy and kindness🍀🍀 they took us in as if we’d known each other ages and made us feel somehow even more at home. maybe one of my personal favorite getaways and we can’t wait to come back in late spring. thank you for everything you lovely people🌀❤️🧚🏼‍♀️

Finally getting round to writing this! We had the best stay here towards the end of August. Absolutely amazing. We had never been to Herefordshire, and now we can’t wait to go back. Just endless views of hills, land and countryside. So good for the soul.

We stayed in the phoenix tree - a proper treehouse - and it was magical. So cleverly done, and whilst basic, that’s the point and all that was needed. Hot tub was so great, and the outdoor shower was a great way to start the day! So refreshing.

Hosts were excellent and so lovely and kind. They’re so passionate about what they do and it came across in our conversations with them. What a life to be there all the time - though we can imagine it’s a hard graft!

We go away every year for our wedding anniversary and this was trip number 5 and by far the best. We would come back in an instant if we could. Thanks Rachel and Matt for a fantastic stay and experience. See you again!

Phoenix tree
We loved our stay at the Phoenix Tree - the view onto the field ahead was gorgeous and we were often visited by Flocky the friendly cat outdoors. We found the bed very comfortable and the hot tub easy to heat. It was August so there was lots of sun and heat but we didn’t find it too hot inside and cooled off in the outdoor shower. It felt tucked away but very close in a car to go to a pub, for ice cream or food bits. We felt we had the perfect amount of privacy yet bumped into the hosts Matt and Rachel a couple times who are very friendly and extremely helpful. We would love to come back!

The Phoenix Tree, this magical, soul soothing space was perfect for my off grid solo retreat.
I stayed in The Phoenix Tree from 15th - 18th May as an off grid solo retreat. It was all I'd hoped for and more. Situated on the Hereford/Welsh border the views were stunning, from the moment I arrived I took a breath of fresh air and my whole self began to relax. Matt was waiting to welcome me as I arrived and to explain a few necessary details. I had chosen to take advantage of Matt & Rachel's offer to have the wood fired hot tub ready for my use that evening and the space heated .... I'd definately recommend this as (after a long drive on a cool evening) it was a joy to walk into such a warm & cosy space. To then be able to luxuriate in the hot tub soon after unpacking with just the sound of birds singing was amazing. Lots of thoughtful touches are included, in this off grid experience .. a well equipped kitchen with cast iron camping stove, cool box to store food, fresh coffee beans, olive oil, salt & pepper. There are hot water bottles & blankets. This beautiful space had been crafted from an incredibly glorious dead oak tree, thoughtfully & lovingly repurposed together with a straw bale and cob building and many unique features. There were so many places to sit and relax, read or simply take in the views. The outside shower was amazing, plenty of hot water in a lovely glade. For me, from the moment I walked round the corner to see the treehouse in all its glory until the moment I left it was a magical, inspiring and soul soothing experience, the perfect place for time alone or with someone you love.

Amazing place
We both love Wales and Treehouses, so this was our dream honeymoon! We had the most magical time! The Phoenix treehouse was perfect! Equipped with all the basics you could need, though we did take our little camping spice/herb kit for bbqs. Comfy, romantic and quiet! We had a riot playing charades in front of the fire, enjoyed a hot tub, and lots of walks. It was the perfect welcome break from our normal, busy city lives. Built Into an Old Oak. Open to the Stars.

Phoenix Tree is built around and on top of an extraordinary old oak tree that’s been growing here for longer than anyone can say. Straw bale walls and a skylight open straight to the night sky.

A steel ladder takes you up to the mezzanine king bed, with the best view on the land. Solar lighting only, no mains power up here, just the kind of quiet that makes you remember what quiet actually sounds like. Access is via a steel ladder, so it’s worth knowing in advance if that’s not right for you.

Why Most Guests Never Leave

Guests describe Phoenix Tree as dropping out of a fairytale. The hot tub under the stars gets called magic more than any other word, and it’s not hard to see why, lying back in hot water with the brook running underneath and an old oak overhead does something to people.

One guest told us it was the best night’s sleep of their lives. We hear that a lot.

Things to know

All of our accommodation is off-grid so be prepared for a ‘back-to-basics’ experience with no mains electricity. The lighting is solar powered, and we have no Wi-Fi.  

The kitchen is well equipped allowing you to wine and dine yourselves including a double gas ring for cooking. We provide some of the basics which include tea, coffee and oil and there is also an outdoor BBQ area. But do come prepared as the nearest shops are 10 minutes drive away.

We will provide a basket of wood for the fire and some natural fire lighters to ensure you stay warm but please do pack for cold weather to ensure you get the most from your nights under canvas.
